The San Francisco Fellows Program is a highly selective 11+ month program where up to 16 recent college graduates are placed in departments in the City and County of San Francisco government to help implement programs and services. The application process includes essays written by applicants, references and submission of transcripts. Applicants are ultimately selected after interviews and review by a multi-disciplinary screening committee. Fellows are not interns -- they are hired as paid, full-time employees.
While Fellows typically demonstrate high academic achievement, a variety of criteria are reviewed, including but not limited to extracurricular experiences, interest in local government, connection to San Francisco, and what they hope to learn in the program. The cohort experience is also a key element of the program and Fellows participate in regular learning sessions, where they have the opportunity to gain exposure to key decision makers and to develop their skills in a variety of areas such as project management, facilitation and communication.
